And Just Like That… The Girls are Back!

By Samantha Bellich

Every girl’s favorite friend group is returning for another season of “And Just Like That,” the spinoff of the well-known and highly loved Sex and the City. The first episode of this third season is scheduled to premiere on May 29th. Although this spin-off feels very different than the first show, it still brings a sense of comfort to all girls who have fallen hard for this television show, including myself.

I discovered Sex and the City right before graduating from college, and to say it brings me deep comfort would be an understatement. At the time, I felt like I was stepping into the same kind of life those women were living—surrounded by close girlfriends, in a vibrant city, chasing our dreams.

But over the past year, I've started to feel like the show lied to me. I imagined my early twenties would be filled with nights out dancing, shopping for secondhand designer bags, and dating both Mr. Wrong and Mr. Right. Instead, I’ve spent most of it at my parents’ house, juggling dozens of open job application tabs, making endless calls to my sister, and leaving texts from failed dates unanswered.

Which has led me to wonder: was the show a lie, or am I simply hesitating to take the leap into real life? Has this chapter already passed me by, or am I just not there yet?

The truth is, life can feel like Sex and the City if we take a moment to recognize the small, meaningful moments that mirror it. No, it might not look like strutting through the city in vintage designer to meet your best friends for dinner and gossip. But it might look like a Sunday morning phone call with an old friend, both of you wrapped in robes, sipping coffee miles apart but still deeply connected.

To stay grounded and to feel less alone while we try to find our place in the world, we simply have to—need to—romanticize our lives.

If Carrie Bradshaw taught me anything, it’s that you don’t need a reason or a big occasion to buy yourself that pair of vintage Prada kitten heels. And just because your life doesn’t look the way you imagined it right now, doesn’t mean it never will.

Our twenties are messy, confusing, and full of trial and error, and that’s exactly what they’re meant to be. So take the risk. Make the mistakes. And remember: we didn’t get to see what our four favorite girls went through to become who they were. We just met them once they got there.
